Every Building Matrix building gets this plan, generated from its own shutoff records, labeling, contacts and training log. This one uses a made-up building, people and phone numbers.

This plan identifies every water shutoff in the building, confirms each is physically labeled and has been verified on site, and sets out who to call and what to do in a water event. It is maintained live in Building Matrix; this printout reflects the records on the date above.

1. In a water emergency

  1. Stop the water. Close the shutoff for the affected line or area (see section 3). If you can't find it within a few minutes, close Building Main Water Shutoff (WTR-MAIN).
  2. Make it safe. Keep people away from water near electrical equipment. Isolate power only if it can be done safely (section 5). If you smell gas, leave and call 911 from outside.
  3. Call for help in the order listed in section 2. Call 911 for any risk to life.
  4. Contain and protect. Use absorbent material, divert water to drains, move property out of the path, and check the units below.
  5. Document. Photograph the source, the water path and every affected area. Log the incident in Building Matrix with the time water was stopped.

3. Water shutoff locations

Main shutoffs first, then by floor from the cellar up. "Labeled" means a Building Matrix QR tag hangs at the valve; scanning it shows this information on a phone.

4. Fire sprinkler control valves

Close a sprinkler valve only when water is flowing from broken sprinkler piping and there is no fire. A closed sprinkler valve leaves that zone unprotected. Notify the fire alarm monitoring company and follow the building's impairment procedure, and reopen the valve as soon as repairs allow.
